Description

The Italian Fiat company demonstrated a new model of armored reconnaissance and policevehicle in 1938. In 1940, the model was put into production and was named the AB40. Theinitial armament of three 8mm machine guns was changed to one 20mm cannon and one 8mmmachine gun with the use of a larger turret for the production of the AB41. After Italys surrenderto the Allies in September 1943, German forces confiscated a number of AB41s and modifiedthem with more powerful engines, new exhaust silencers, and other improvements. The vehicleswith such improvements were classified as AB43s, and they were used primarily in theItalian theater of operations by the German forces.
